THE 92d DIVISION IN WORLD WAR I
The 92d Division was organized in October, 1917, at Camps Funston, Grant,
Dodge, Upton, Meade and Dix from National Army drafts from all part of
the United States and assembled at Camp Upton, New York in June 1918.
The first unit of the division arrived in France June 19, 1918, the last
element July 18, 1918, and established its headquarters at Bourbonne-les-Bains.
On August 11, 1918, the division went to the Vosges Mountains with headquarters
at Bruyeres and on August 18 commenced the relief of the 5th Division
(US) in the St. Die Sector, completing the relief August 31. It remained
in line until September 21, when it proceeded to the vicinity of Thiaucourt.
On September 25 the division, less some detachments constituted the reserve
of the I Army Corps in the Meuse Argonne Offensive. On September 29th
the division less one infantry brigade, the artillery and the engineers
formed the reserve of the French 1st Dismounted Cavalry Division and on
October 3, was relieved and placed at the disposal of the First American
Army, I Corps Reserve; on October 4 it was assigned to the IV American
Corps and proceeded to the vicinity of Toul where on October 9 it relieved
the 69th French Division in the Marbache Sector. It then passed from the
IV Corps to the VI Corps on October 29 and participated in the attack
of the Second American Army November 10-11, 1918, operating along the
heights on both banks of the Moselle River in the direction of Corny.
After the Armistice the division remained over seas until the middle
of December 1918 when it returned to the United States.
