The Coasters, Harley-Davidson riders to visit McClellan
Doo-wop and the grumbling rumble of motorcycles will mix Saturday night
at this week's Music at McClellan offering.
The doo-wop comes courtesy of The Coasters, who had such hits as "Yakety
Yak" and "Charlie Brown" in the 1950s. Original vocalist
Carl Gardner is still with the band and his son, Carl Gardner Jr., joined
the band full time in 2004. The other members joined after the hits quit
coming, although Thomas Palmer has been around since 1962 and Ronnie Bright
joined in 1968. Alvin Morse came onboard in 1997 and J.W. Lance in 2001.
The rumbling grumble will be delivered by hundreds of Harley-Davidson
riders, part of the Harley Owners Group (H.O.G.) Rally that's taking place
this weekend in Oxford. They'll ride into McClellan, and roar into the
concert just before the Coasters take the stage.

Composing McClellan's opus
Organizers of the Music at McClellan Longleaf Series were hoping for
lawn chairs Saturday night -- lots and lots of lawn chairs.
At 8 p.m., volunteers at the ticket office estimated some 1,500 people
were enjoying the opening sounds of the alabama Symphony Orchestra with
still more arriving, lawn chairs in tow.

Annual Longleaf Series aims to hit its stride
In order for some lessons to be truly learned, they must not only be
experienced but survived.
Just ask Pete Conroy who, on a night two years ago, found out just how
tempestuous ol' Mother Nature can be, especially when clear skies are
considered a defining element of success.

Music at McClellan Starts Saturday!
Please mark your calendars, call your friends, pack your picnic, and
get ready for Music at McClellan.
The third season of Anniston’s “Longleaf Series” featuring
the Alabama Symphony Orchestra starts this Saturday, May 27th. Followed
by three additional concerts (June 3rd, 10th and 17th), the 2006 season
promises life long memories for all those who attend. While the website
http://www.musicatmcclellan.org/ has ticket
information and plenty of detail, the most important thing to remember
is that on every night the grounds open at 6:00 and the concerts begin
at 8:00. Also important is the abundance of entertainment before each
show. We’ll have activities for children, jugglers, mimes, pre-concert
musical acts, food, and beverage vendors too.
If in case of rain, no problem – we have an indoor facility known
as Miller Gym that we sometimes call the Miller Music Hall because of
its amazingly terrific acoustics. Many have said that our rain location
has the best sound that they have ever heard.
But no matter the weather and no matter the show, every night is designed
for a high quality performance, unbeatable family fun, and easy access
for all. Please log on or call 256-310-0852 for more information.
Remember, if you act now, you can buy three and get one free. That’s
an $80 ticket value for $60.
The series gets even better when you add our “Free Friday Flicks”
(outdoor movies at McClellan), the Saturday Market and brunch at the Terra
Cafe. Thank you for supporting the arts and we’ll see you at Music
at McClellan!

Things looking up at McClellan
A drive up the state highway bordering the western side of what was once
Fort McClellan is an economics lesson. When thousands of GIs called the
fort home, McClellan Boulevard businesses catered to soldiers and their
families.
With the soldiers gone from the fort nearly six years, the stretch of
road in front of McClellan is changing to keep pace. Gone is the over-reliance
on khaki-clad customers to keep the cash registers ringing.

More features could draw larger Music at McClellan crowds
by Crystal Jarvis
This summer’s Music at McClellan event may be expanded, with added
activities for the enjoyment of participants.
Ideas discussed Thursday during Music at McClellan’s first committee
meeting of the year include dinner at McClellan’s Terra Café
while a featured artist performs, a gospel series on Sundays, and an activity
area designated just for kids.
